FREE AUDIO OF THE MALTESE WALNUT.

Here I’ve recorded the audio version of The Maltese Walnut as an alternative source of sampling. (Amazon gives away the first 10% of the book online.)
I first read this to the cover artist of my INCOMPLETE UNCOLLECTED SHORT WORKS. Each time I read the story to someone, the tale was performed with the same silly voices you’ll hear on the recording.
Little, if anything, changed in my recorded rendition of the piece. In my head, I still hear a stripped-down sax version of the Mike Hammer TV theme opening the tale.
That’s Harlem Nocturne, with Mr Keach as Mike Hammer. Hammer’s creator Mickey Spillane appeared as the character in a movie. The Mickster wasn’t available to make this recording on account of his bein’ deadly-deceased...
   So I stepped in.
Another experiment in publishing. In blogging. Why do it? To entice readers to buy the book and read the sequel to this tale. The Stain Curse has its own sequel. Wing Nut at the Opera was everything I planned it to be.
This recording runs just under half an hour. It’s very silly. All stories about private investigators should be.
Why release this version into the wilds? There are imperfections, sure. But I like the atmosphere. So take the recording as it is, with its creaky chair and those percussive sounds as I lean too close to the microphone.
This recording is the second version. My first stab at the piece was a stab in the dark. I think if I did a third version, I’d drain the energy from the performance. Best to let it lie, pops and creaks and all.
To explore more of my fiction, read The Chalice in the Snow on the Hallowe’en page. That serves as an introduction to Neon Gods Brought Down by Swords.
